Devils

This work was inspired by the myths and legends surrounding Tooreen Dancehall, located in Co Mayo, Ireland. The dancehall was a thriving location during the latter part of the 1900s, one of the epicentres of Irish nightlife. Across Ireland, people of a certain generation are familiar with Tooreen and the many stories associated with the dance hall, the most famous of which concerns an appearance by the Devil at a dance in 1954. I incorporated local people’s personal accounts and other documentation (newspaper clippings, advertisements, photographs, etc.) into an installation that mimicked the legendary dancehall.

Devil in the Dancehall exhibition was the culmination of my year-long CAP Art Foundation residency in Dublin.
