In 2004, I
was one of two students awarded a one-year bursary and residency
in Dublin by the US-based CAP Art Foundation, culminating
in this exhibition.
This
work was inspired by the myths and legends
surrounding Tooreen Dancehall, located in Co Mayo, Ireland.
The dancehall
was a thriving location during the latter part of the 1900s,
one of the epicentres of Irish nightlife, and there are
still many incredible stories in circulation about what transpired
there, the most infamous concerning an appearance by the
Devil at a dance in 1954. I incorporated native people’s
personal accounts and
other documentation (newspaper clippings, advertisements,
photographs, etc.) into an installation that mimicked
the legendary dancehall.
